Mini Medieval Triptychs

Laurie Mika, Instructor
Saturday, October 15, 2016, 9:30am - 4:30pm
Class Fee: $130.00, kit fee $15.00

Laurie Mika is a mixed-media artist with a passion for combining a variety of mediums creating an original style of mixed-media mosaics using handmade polymer clay tiles. Like a modern-day alchemist tinkering with the ancient art of mosaics, Laurie finds magic in combining disparate elements.

In this class we will be creating beautiful Gothic triptychs (7 x 9 inches) using a variety of mixed-media techniques. We will begin by altering the triptychs using a relief method for creating the surface texture. Then we will make mosaic tiles with a focal point that will go in the center of the triptych. Laurie will teach you to paint, powder, stamp, embed, collage, transfer, and more onto and into the clay. This is truly a mixed-media class where you'll learn to blend a variety of contemporary techniques into a Medieval looking piece of art. No two pieces will be the same, and the color palette is yours to choose.

Supply to Bring:
3-4 small (2 oz) packages of either Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay *the colors don't end up being sen all that much. Please make sure the clay is somewhat soft by pressing your thumb into it. If it feels rock hard, don't buy it! Please pre-condition clay prior to class by kneading it until soft and then roll into a ball and store in a baggie, 1 small (2 oz) package of white or tan Premo or Sculpey III clay, a small bottle of Weldbond glue (available at Michaels or Ace Hardware), a one-inch paintbrush and a small detail brush, a few doo-dads to embed in clay like charms, buttons, beads, found objects, Milagros, jewelry parts, watch parts, metal findings, small glass tile, wings, crowns, halos, page pebbles (glass domes). Refer to photos above.

All class fees are prepaid, and non-refundable. Contact class manager Dede  Warren at 714-757-0558 to reserve your place in this class. Botanical & Rust Dyed Scarves

Lorri Scott, Instructor
Saturday, August 27, 10am - 4:30pm
Class Fee: $125.00
$30 kit fee

Northern California artist Lorri Scott is gathering flora, fabric, rusty bits, and her tools to come share her process in eco-dyeing with Gilding the Lily. We couldn't be more excite to host Lorri and learn her unique methods.
This class is a journey through a garden of your own creation to wear when you need the soft embrace of Mother Nature. Fabric is laid out, littered with fallen leaves, bygone rose petals, neglected rust relics, and perhaps sprinkled with a few special elements. Bundles of nature are wrapped, bound, and left to transcend and work their magic.
In this workshop we will experiment on various fabrics as well as vintage linen. Scarf blanks will be dyed and you can choose to further embellish them with some of your eco-dyed prints, or leave them as is. Lorri will show us how to finish the scarves with her unique hand seen hem. Bring a few of your favorite bits to embellish your scarf further, as well as a bit of rhinestone chain for added sparkle. Be prepared for the heady aroma of eucalyptus, and onion skins smoldering, and be open to the surprising transformations of the dye process.

Supply to Bring:
pincushion & pins, fabric scissors,
protective apron (disposable gloves will be provided)
vintage lace, buttons, trim & adornments for embellishment

All class fees are prepaid, and non-refundable. Contact class manager Dede  Warren at 714-757-0558 to reserve your place in this class.
