Oregon artist Lonnie Jenck is back at Gilding the Lily with her all new Crown of Glory Necklace. This class will highlight construction of the focal piece including easy soldering techniques, molten metal stamping, and attachment of wire and rhinestones. Lonnie will generously supply everything need to build the focal piece including the religious image. If you'd like to personalize your piece with your own image, the size is 2x2 inches. Lonnie created her necklace using supplies from Gilding the Lily, so Nancy will be sure to have findings from the shop available for purchase for those of you interested.

Connie Freedman and Dede Warren have been friends for years and both have a love of vintage elements and handmade jewelry. We are so excited to offer this much requested class with a focus on jewelry design. With an amazing eye for design, Connie will share her process in working with vintage and new elements, as she helps each of you designing a necklace using the pieces you've collected. Dede will teach the basics of  jewelry construction as you connect these elements through wire-wrapping, crimp beads and wire, simple jump rings, as well as creating handmade chain. With two teachers and a very limited class size each of you will leave with not only a finished necklace, but also a good base for designing and assembling future works. Feel free to bring several focal pieces and lets spend the day creating fabulous jewelry! Connie and Dede will have a generous supply kit for each of you, and Nancy will have a variety of found objects available for purchase, should you need a little something special for your piece.

Cindy Gonzales is back with an all new class in Art Clay Silver. As many of you have discovered Art Clay Silver is a great new medium that allows you to produce fine silver jewelry pieces. In this workshop Cindy will expand your knowledge of Art Clay and what you can do with it. The focus will be on intermediate techniques in layering and carving, as well as connecting these pieces. You'll learn to make slip, use syringe clay, connect and layer molded and sculpted pieces to create a 3 dimensional focal piece that is ready to wear home on class day. While Cindy is self taught, she has been invited to join the Art Clay Society and has had highly experienced teachers asking her for information! Her work is simply amazing, and Cindy will work with each of you to produce a one-of-a-kind fine silver work of art!

We are thrilled to welcome author and artist Seth Apter to Gilding the Lily! What a treat to have this east coast talent here on the west coast in early 2014. We are making this class announcement early, as we've already had people wanting to sign up.
In his 3-hour workshop, Seth will introduce you to a series of techniques that combine to create complex, textured backgrounds that can be applied to any substrate and used in a multitude of art projects. You will learn ways to use gesso to build-up visual texture, layering strategies for acrylic paint, and techniques to add complex color layers with your own recipe for acrylic glazes. Finally, additional techniques to add visual interest to your backgrounds will also be introduced. While the workshop is technique driven, we will be applying these techniques to a series of different substrates, including wood panels and watercolor paper. In the end, you will leave with a number of completed backgrounds, ready for you to use for artwork, journal pages, and many other artistic projects.
Class size limited to 12 students.


Supply List:
White gesso; fluid acrylics – Golden brand recommended (at least 6 colors within your favorite color palette); acrylic glazing liquid; paint brushes -assorted sizes (½” and 1” inexpensive bristle brushes work well); brayer; mister; texturizing tool (examples include corrugated cardboard, textured/embossed paper, bubble wrap, sponges, etc.).

We hope you'll help us welcome jewelry artist Judith Hernandez to our Gilding family of teachers. Judith has designed this stunning Nepal Knotted and Wrapped Necklace, and is eager to share it with all of you. While her example is shown in beautiful shades of blue and orange beads, you are free to create a necklace in your favorite colors. Judith will be teaching several different knotting designs meant to help you create a one-of-a-kind piece that reflects your own style. So bring a friend, gather a few beads, and one special focal for your necklace and come learn to wrap and knot your way to a beautiful necklace of your own.

Great workshop for beginning rivet tool students who want to explore more applications for this sensational tool, or for newbies who want to try it on for size and see if they like it. You'll make this beautiful cuff bracelet, composed of a vintage brass and steel cuff bracelet paired with a beautiful crown bezel in brass, and side embellishments from Gilding's inventory of pewter and brass. You'll complete two bracelet bases during class, and then we'll send them off for plating in rich sterling. Our sample is shown gently aged with our gold and silver darkener.

Choose from images from my library you can trap under glass domes, or select beautiful faceted German rauten stones to be the centerpiece of your cuff...or do one of each! When your pieces come back from the plater, you'll pick them up at the store and finish them by setting your focals and crimping the bezels.



Tools and supplies: Bring basic jewelry tools to class that include pliers (flat and round nose) and cutters. If you have shaping pliers or a rivet tool, please bring them, too. We'll be using two sizes of shaping pliers to size the cuffs, and will try to have all these, including the rivet tools and supplies, on sale that day at class. We can also take orders for the rivet tools and supplies.

Your class includes: Two cuff bases, two bezels, four embellishment pieces, and your choice of glass domes and images and/or faceted cabochons, and plating of your items, which should take 1-2 weeks to complete. We will have at least two rivet tools and vises on hand to use, and your riveting supplies are also included.

Please welcome back resident artist, Bridgette Antonelli in creating this one of a kind metal and glass Ave Maria Shrine. In this class Bridgette will teach you a variety of techniques used in this unique assemblage. You'll learn an easy way to create a lasting dimensional finish on metal, how to cover plastic or nearly any surface with an  amazing bronze-like finish, basic rosary chain technique, metal stamping, punching and riveting. She'll  even cover how to distress  fiber embellishments and an easy image transfer method for the glass panels of your shrine. While this is a project based class, the techniques you learn here are certainly ones you'll want to incorporate in all your jewelry or mixed media projects!


Supply List:
All supplies are included, but please bring basic jewelry making tools (rosary chain pliers, flat and round nose), bench block, and a small hammer. A  heat gun is also helpful if you have one. If you don't have tools, no worries, Bridgette will have some there to share.

Connie Freedman and Dede Warren are back with an all new class... Handcrafted Connections with Wire! With so many ways of putting jewelry together, we thought we'd spend a full day focusing on building a solid base for assembling your designs. With wire as our main source, we will cover wire gauge and hardness, as well as the various types of wire that can be used in jewelry. We will start with the basics of  creating eye pins, head pins & jump rings, and expand to creating handmade chains, soldered links, hammered finishes, patinas and beyond. We'll also create hook & eye closures in a variety of styles, and as always we will share our quick & easy tips for learning to wire wrap! Cathleen Leveque is back with us graciously offering her Master Class in soldered bottles, and we couldn't be happier to share the studio with her. Cathleen has designed and created stunning soldered bottles for years and in this workshop she will focus on helping you design and create your own Masterpiece! You'll want to work with a beautiful bottle as well as a special focal piece. This could be a piece of jewelry, a vintage ornament, a small doll, or any variety of focals. So long as it won't melt the sky is the limit here! Perhaps you'd like to add shells, beads, stones or crystals. Start gathering your favorite found objects and vintage treasures and come join Cathleen as she pulls out all the stops and helps you design and build your own Masterpiece! This class is only open to 6 students for a very focus, in depth study in soldered bottles.

Cathleen Leveque is a Laguna Beach local who has been making soldered bottles for many years. A seasoned artist who is inspired by the past, present and future, Cathleen transforms vintage bottles, blown glass, crystals, shells and more into beautiful one of a kind art bottles. Come learn under her direction and let her inspire you to create beautiful things as well. While our bottles won't be as elaborate as those shown here, you will have the option of working with supplied crystals and shells in a variety of basic designs. Think outside of the box and bring a few lone earrings, necklaces, brass or copper filigree pieces, ornament, or perhaps an old brooch. Cathleen will be happy to show you how these can be incorporated into your work.

Mr Hop's Easter Corsage

Cindy Gonzales has created this darling wrist corsage evocative of an old fashioned Easter Bonnet. Vintage lace, trim, crepe and more, as well as a hand-sculpted rabbit come together under Cindy's creative spirit. In this workshop Cindy will teach you to create the fiber wrist band base, which could easily be adapted as a headband as well. You will be hand sewing as well as machine sewing. From there you will embellish with various trims, as well as sculpt and paint your own Easter bunny. Seats are limited and Cindy's classes fill quickly, so please call early if you want a seat in this fun class.

Dede Warren has married collage and solder to this beveled glass shield and come up with a fun mixed-media project. Come play with paper, paint, rubber stamps, pens, markers, ink, and much more and create this award shield dedicated to someone special. Hanging 6 x 10 inches this plaque will feature a personal photo, and quote so that each student walks away with a true original. Dedicate this to the one you love, someone special in your life, or celebrate yourself. We will finish our piece with a soldered edge. Dede will bring everything you need to put this together. But don't forget to bring a personal photo, and start thinking of words of inspiration as well. Dede will have soldering equipment to share for those of you who don't yet have your soldering supplies. This is the perfect size project to explore the fun of collage, as well as soldering for those of you new to these two mediums.

Taking Shape

Hammered and Riveted Bangles - New Date!

Create a trio of hand forged bangles with riveted focals starting with just raw metal and a hammer. Learn sizing equations and measuring, metal working, hammer and texture techniques, and get hands on time with the incredible Crafted Findings piercing and riveting tool. Choose from two wire colors which you will texture and age, then hammer stations for your focals, and pierce and rivet those into place. Class will cover hand finishing, tools, polishes, and sealers.

All supplies are provided for this workshop, which will include brass and silver (tinned copper) wire, selected focals in solid brass, hand cast bronze, and sterling clad pewter.

Olde Soul Dolls

We are so excited to have Joanna Pierotti with us teaching her beautiful Olde Soul Dolls. Joanna created and began selling these stunning dolls years ago. Clothed with found objects, metal and tattered cloth comes together with hand painted bisque ware, vintage ephemera, rhinestone, chains and more to make up these Olde Souls. In this full day workshop Joanna will teach you her painting techniques and patina process on new bisque ware doll parts. You will then learn how to build the body, create a ruffled petticoat, and add layers of fabric and lace all done with simple hand stitching. You will decorate her dress in whatever embellishments you bring... think chain, charms, buttons, and more. In order to allow your doll to fly, Joanna will share her secrets for creating layered, fibrous wings.

These aren’t your mothers or grandmother’s rhinestones anymore! Here is a workshop designed to give those cherished vintage rhinestone necklaces a complete make over, modernizing that elegance of the past. Bring collectible found objects and parts you have been gathering up, and those beautiful rhinestone necklaces handed down from generation to generation, or uncovered at an antique show, so you can transform them into a modern classics. You will disassemble these beauties, and re-attach, adding pieces of found objects and chain, working through the design like a jigsaw puzzle. The result is astonishingly beautiful, rich and eloquent, yet casual enough to wear with jeans. These are so much fun to make, you won’t believe the flexibility you have when redesigning with vintage rhinestone necklaces. Bring treasures like large old buttons, watch cases, old brooches, antique buttons, pearls, some chain, vintage pictures/tintypes, frame stampings, vintage and glass pearls, bead caps, maybe gems, whatever makes your heart beat faster! You can work almost anything in to the design. Riki likes to mix metal colors if possible with my found objects, but this is entirely up to you. The fun begins when narrowing down your selected items, then working through how to attach and where to put the objects, completely gratifying when done! Riki will be right along side, helping you with your vision. Then later throw on your jeans and wear your revitalized beauty to dinner.
