During WWI and WWII as one of many home-front efforts to support our soldiers, Americans knitted items to be send to the front. Many still do this today! In a charming reversal British Solders created beaded pincushions during WWI and sent them home to mothers, wives, or sweethearts. After Nancy uncovered a box of these stunning treasures, Dede and Connie set about creating their own. We hope you'll join us as we learn the history, materials, designs and more in recreating our own Sweetheart Pin Cushion. Dede and Connie will have a huge stash for you to pull your materials from and all the supplies you need. Just bring a small sewing kit and come create with us in the company of friends on Brookdale.

Embedded Heart Shrines

Laurie Mika, Instructor
Saturday, May 17, 2014, 9:00-5:00p
Class Fee: $120.00
Kit fee $20.00, payable in class

Laurie Mika is an artist, author and instructor with a passion for combining and layering polymer clay and mixed-media techniques to create original style mixed-media mosaic tiles. Hearts are one of Laurie favorite symbols and in this workshop we will focus on an embedded polymer clay heart as the centerpiece of our shrines. The unique thing is that the embedded heart pendant will be removable so that when you would like to wear the pendant, you can simply take it out of the shrine! We will explore a variety of mixed media techniques that include rubber stamping, painting, collage, transfers, embedding, beading and metal leaf. This class is a great way to create something that is both an art piece for the wall and a wearable piece of art! This full day workshop is open to all skill levels and Laurie welcomes beginners to come learn at her side while creating you own beautiful Embedded Heart Shrine.

Supplies & Tools:
4-5 small (2 ounce) packages of Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay (3 of the same color, preferably darker colors. Make sure the clay is somewhat soft by pressing your thumb into it, if it feels rock hard, don’t buy it! Please condition clay prior to class by kneading it until soft and then rolling into a ball and store in a baggie. a rolling pin works well),
