Majestic Medallions

Seth Apter, Instructor
Friday, January 16, 2015, 6:00-9:00pm
Class Fee: $60.00
Kit Fee: $10.00

Seth Apter is coming back in Southern California mid January and he's headed to Gilding the Lily! Come learn to create your own Majestic Medallions using bezels and pendants from Spellbinders A Gilded Life collection along with your own found and purchased objects. The addition of paper, foil, and embellishments will bring a royal flair to these pieces. Your medallions can be vintage, steampunk, victorian, colorful, blingy, or any other style you choose. We will be creating a painted base for the medallions so they can be displayed as artwork but options to use your creations as jewelry or stand-alone assemblage will also be reviewed.

Tools & Supplies:
*Acrylic paint (assorted colors, some metallic paint suggested) *Paint brushes (cheap bristle brushes work well) *Water container and paint palette *Water mister *Adhesive: bring two types of your favorite – one for adhering paper (my favorite is PVA) and one for adhering metal (my favorite non-toxic brand is Liquid Fusion and my favorite toxic brand is Loctite) * Paper: card stock, craft foil, hand painted, scrapbook sheets, etc. to cut up using provided dies *Hardware: assorted sizes/patinas, vintage and/or new. Examples include metal or rubber washers, watch parts, gears, pocket watch-cases, coins, commercial embellishments, brads, etc. Think in terms of circular-ish shapes that have a circumference of 3 inches or less. *Bling: small stones, gems, craft self-adhesive bling, etc.

Wednesday

Fantasy Flower People

Susan Walls, Instructor
Saturday, October 25, 2014, 10:00-2:00p
Class Fee: $80.00, everything included!

Two things are continual and obsessive threads in all of Susan's work, it doesn't matter whether she's painting, sewing, putting jewelry together, or journaling. Faces and shrink plastic. That's it! Susan is a shrink plastic addict who dreams of faces... all kinds of faces!
In this class Susan will share all the steps for using and manipulating artist grade shrink plastic. From an array of whimsical vintage faces each creation will be given a personality and some resin to get that see through quality. Once finished your pieces are wearable art as pendants or earrings, you choose!
This class is technique driven but we will shoot for getting at least a couple of pieces to completion. More can be made depending on time constraints. The resin, which will be our last step, will be wet when poured and needs a minimum of 24 hours cure time to be able to handle it safely. Some findings will need to be attached after this time. Susan will provide boxes and containers to get these home safely.
No experience necessary... all levels welcome!

 Tools & Supplies:
All materials for this class are generously supplied by Susan.

The following are optional:
apron, silicone mat, StazOn black ink pad, lazer printed photocopies of faces printed on cheap copy paper (1/2 x 3/4 inch), razor scissors

Jen Cushman, Instructor
Saturday, November 8, 2014, 10:00-3:00p
Class Fee: $115.00, everything included!

The vintage visages in old photos are too precious and inspiring to collect dust in an old box. Take your treasured family photo (or choose from the transparencies provided) and turn it into a beautiful wearable work of art in this workshop with Jen Cushman, mixed-media artist, author and instructor. We’ll learn how to effectively harness both positive and negative space when creating mixed media pendants using lovely backless bezels and ICE Resin®, a crystal clear jeweler’s grade epoxy resin. Embed small treasures into your collage, such as rhinestone chain, buttons, text or words, glass glitter, vintage ribbon or lace, millenary flowers, broken bits of bobbles and jewels to create a truly unique beauty. Gilded rosary chain and tattered ribbons provide just the touch of vintage-inspired design to our Mon Petit Coeur necklace. Jen and Gilding the Lily will provide everything needed to complete this lovely piece!

Tools & Supplies:
Round nose jewelry pliers, flat nose or chain nose pliers, wire snips, and scissors.
*If you wish to personalize your piece...

Class Fee: $95.00

We all have keepsakes and momentos that are special to us and Susan Bates-Bezek has come up with a great way to encase and display them. In this technique driven workshop we will adapt the size and shape of our shine to that treasured piece we saved for "someday". There is no limit to the size or depth of the item you can enshrine, this is very unique. You just need a piece of glass as tall and wide as the object you're putting inside. Susan will teach you to build a sturdy box to the glass, not vise versa. It can be round, square, triangle, etc. Susan is available before hand to help you find just the right glass for this project. She has made sizes from 1/1/4" oval to 9x12". Let your imagination run wild and come create your own unique Treasured Shrine!

Soldering Basics & Beyond

Dede Warren, Instructor
Saturday, August 16, 2014, 10:00am - 4:00pm
Class Fee: $85.00

Have you wanted to learn to solder but perhaps been afraid of the tools involved? No doubt a torch with a flame reaching 12 inches can be intimidating, as well as learning to create with a tool that reaches temperatures of 900 degrees. There's a lot to learn to safely and easily use these tools. Local Artist Dede Warren will share her knowledge of soldering on a variety of mediums. This workshop will give you a basic knowledge of what you can and cannot solder, the tools and supplies involved and how to use them, and a variety of ways in which to use this skill.

Our focus in this hands on workshop will be the elements of soldering and not project oriented. Dede will supply the materials to create your own soldered chain, a 3 dimensional bezel, and will share how to create a chunk, rough finished soldered 3 dimensional piece, along with using a variety of patinas. This class is rich in soldering techniques, and our focus will be on learning the art of soldering. While we will create chain and a bezel we will not be creating a finished project with either of these. If you have a 3 dimensional piece you'd like to solder, please bring these with you and we will discover and troubleshoot the ways you can solder these pieces. If you want to learn to create a specific project using soldering this might just be the class for you!

Supply to Bring:
• soldering supplies if you have them • tin snips • basic jewelry pliers • metal file
• apron or towel for your lap • old cookie sheet to work on

All class fees are prepaid, and non-refundable. Contact class manager Dede  Warren at 714-757-0558 to reserve your place in this class.
